Day Tripping from North Oaks: Wild Mountain

The kids will be out of school starting Friday and will be ready and able to drive you nuts.  Time for a pre-holiday day trip to let off some steam – and you can be there in less than one hour.

“There” is Wild Mountain in Taylors Falls, northeast of North Oaks. Skiers and snowboarders of all levels will love this place with equipment rentals and well-maintained runs. The facility features 100 acres of fun, with 26 trails, four terrain parks and a newbie discovery area. Try out the Wild Chutes for some pretty crazy tubing.

If you’re a beginner, the folks at Wild Mountain are happy to teach you in their Snowsports School.

The entire resort is constantly under the watchful eye of the many ski patrol members. The Wild Mountain Ski Patrol is trained by and is a member of the National Ski Patrol System, by the way.

Check out their website for coupons. Fridays, by the way, are Ladies’ Days and they get $10 off their lift ticket. So, if you plan to go this weekend, Mom may have more fun than anyone else in the family.

Wild Mountain is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. On Fridays they remain open until 10:00 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays they open a half hour earlier. They offer both day and night rates, with the latter being less expensive.

While Wild Mountain does have a snack concession, if you plan on making a weekend of family fun, there are hotels and various restaurants in the area. Holiday Inn Express St. Croix Valley gets kudos at Yelp, as does Tangled Up in Blue, a popular eatery in the area. If for no other reason, visit for the Bananas Foster. The restaurant is located at 425 Bench Street in Taylors Falls.

If you need a break from the shopping, cooking, gift wrapping and decorating, take a day trip – or a weekend trip to relax and unwind with the family.
