With spring finally here, it may be time to do some spring cleaning. This could include organizing your closets and making them much easier to deal with. Here are a few steps to take if you want to create an organized closet fast.

Step #1 - Empty the Closet

Before you do anything else, you want to empty your closet. Sort everything into piles including:

  • A keep pile
  • A give away pile
  • A storage pile
  • A recycle pile
  • A trash pile

This makes it easier to see what you will actually need to organize when it's time to put your closet back together.

Typically, you don't want to bother keeping anything you haven't used in the past year. If the item is in good shape, you can put it in the giveaway or donate pile and let somebody else get use out of it. However, if it's not in good condition, you can simply add it to the recycle or trash pile.

Step #2 - Box up the Storage Pile

After you've emptied your closet and sorted it into piles, you will need to box up the items in the storage pile. Make sure to label the boxes so that you will know what's in each box. This can include pictures, clothing and other items you don't need right now or won't need for quite some time. It might be a good idea to box up your heavy winter clothing until the winter comes back around next year.

Step #3 - Organize What's Left

Now you should only have the items left you really need in your closet. Choose the categories you want to use for your clothing and accessories. You can organize your shoes by occasion or use. It may be helpful to add a new shelving unit, hooks, planks or dividers to make your closet even more organized.

These three steps make it very easy to organize your closet and make it much more functional. Use these steps this spring and make spring cleaning a breeze.
