In a little over one month, North Oaks’ children will be going back to school (first day of school is September 8). If you’re new to the area and have elementary school-aged children they will attend Turtle Lake Elementary, in the Mounds View Public Schools, ISD 621.
This district is one of 10 that carries the distinction of teaching the most National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
Turtle Lake Elementary, which is located in Shoreview, serves 931 students in grades K through 5. The school employs 55 full-time teachers, giving it a student/teacher ratio of almost 18:1.
Turtle Lake Elementary School offers special education classes and programs for English language learners. It also offers the High Performance program for those students who need to be challenged at a higher level in certain subjects.
Test Scores and Rankings
The school-ranking website GreatSchools.org awards Turtle Lake with nine out of a possible 10 stars, while SchoolDigger.com gives it five out of five stars.
Turtle Lake students consistently and significantly outscore both the district’s and the state’s average on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments Series III exams (MCA-III) – in some subjects by a significant margin.
For instance, in 2014, 85.4 percent of Turtle Lake’s fifth graders met or exceeded the MCA-III standards for reading, while 76.2 percent in the district did the same and only 67.7 in the state met or exceeded the standard.
Parents say that Turtle Lake’s teachers are “amazing,” and they appreciate how they continually strive to make the school even better.
