A home garden is a great way to enjoy a hobby, grow some fresh foods and green up your landscape. Whether you have done a garden in the past or this will be your first year, there are some things you should consider to do this year. Here are a few green ideas to help you make the most of your garden this year.

Start by Greening Your Soil

The big box retailers may have easy to grab and use soil, but organic soil is far better for your plants. You can usually find this type of soil at local nurseries or plant stores. If you can find local soil, it's the best choice.

Start with Seeds

You may have started with actual plants before, but starting with seeds can often be a better way to go. This reduces the environmental impact because there won't be as much packaging or waste. It also allows you to choose what you grow and how it's grown throughout the entire process.

Find Natural Fertilizers

Natural fertilizers are fare better than chemical fertilizers and will keep your plants healthy. Make sure you do a bit of research and get the right type of fertilizer for your specific plants. There are plenty to choose from including dry, liquid and a number of varieties. A local greenhouse can help you make the right choice.

Choose the Right Hose

Did you know some hoses are made with harmful chemicals? Make sure you choose a lead free, PVC free hose and isn't labeled with a "California Prop 65 warning."
